Flossing Tips for a Healthier Smile
A small change in how you floss can make your daily routine easier and more thorough. At Balboa Dentistry in San Diego, we help patients feel confident about caring for their smiles between visits. Our team welcomes your questions and can demonstrate a comfortable technique suited to your teeth and gums.
Use a Gentle, Tooth-Hugging Technique
Floss once a day to clean spaces a toothbrush cannot fully reach. The American Dental Association's flossing guide recommends these basic steps:
- Start with about 18 inches of floss. Wrap most around one middle finger and the rest around the opposite middle finger.
- Use your thumbs and index fingers to hold a short section taut.
- Ease the floss between two teeth with a gentle rubbing motion. Avoid snapping it into your gums.
- Curve it into a C against one tooth, gently reaching just below the gumline. Move up and down along that tooth, then clean the neighboring tooth's side.
- Unwind a clean section as you move around your mouth. Include the back surfaces of your last teeth.
Follow the Same Route Each Time
A consistent order helps you avoid skipping a space. For example, begin at the upper right, work around the upper teeth, and then follow the lower arch. Take your time rather than rushing through the hard-to-reach areas. If you are unsure whether you are reaching each surface, ask us to watch your technique at your next visit.
Choose Floss That Works for You
Waxed and unwaxed floss are both options. Waxed floss may slide more easily between closely spaced teeth, while broader, flatter dental tape may feel more comfortable in wider spaces. Specialty floss with a stiffened end and spongy section can help with certain dental work when used as directed. Some people find a handled flosser easier to manage. Your preferences, tooth spacing, and restorations can all influence the best choice, so bring your questions to our team.
