Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) and Guarding Against Dental Problems

Preventive dental care visit at Balboa Dentistry in San Diego

04/06/2026

Along with following current health recommendations to help limit the spread of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), it is also important to stay mindful of other health concerns that can develop when daily routines are disrupted.

During stressful or challenging periods, healthy meals, regular activity, rest, and overall wellness all matter. Your smile deserves that same attention. Brushing and flossing every day, limiting sugary snacks, and avoiding habits that can damage teeth can lower your risk for dental problems or urgent issues that may require an office visit.

A healthy mouth depends on keeping the teeth and gums clean. Because the mouth and nose can be entry points for COVID-19 and other infections, taking a few extra precautions during your oral hygiene and personal care routines can help protect both your smile and your general health.

Helpful Oral Health Precautions

  • Wash your hands before and after oral care. Clean hands are important before brushing or flossing and again when you are finished.
  • Keep your toothbrush clean, dry, and separate. Rinse your toothbrush after use, store it upright so it can air dry, and keep it from touching other brushes. The American Dental Association offers additional toothbrush care guidance .
  • Do not share oral care items. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, water flosser tips, mouthguards, retainers, and other items used in the mouth should be kept for individual use only.
  • Clean bathroom surfaces and toothbrush holders regularly. Toothbrush containers, countertops, faucets, and other high-touch bathroom surfaces can collect germs. The CDC provides practical guidance on when and how to clean and disinfect your home .
