Crowns sometimes referred to as “caps,” are dental prosthetics usually made of porcelain and are used to protect and repair damaged teeth. They may also be used to top dental implants. Crowns are fitted and secured over damaged teeth with a permanent bonding adhesive.
Having a crown installed typically requires two appointments to Dr. Dhayni’s office. During the first visit, he creates a mold of your tooth, then covers the tooth with a temporary crown, while your permanent crown is fabricated. It can be color-tinted and custom contoured to perfectly match your natural teeth. At the second appointment, Dr. Dhayni installs your permanent crown.
In some cases, a porcelain crown is fused to a metal base. These crowns are extremely durable but often have a gray or silver tint. A thin gray line can also appear along the patient’s gums. For that reason, they’re typically only used on back teeth.
Crowns are an effective solution for a number of dental problems. Among the most common are:
Crowns can last a lifetime. As with your natural teeth, they are prone to cracking and breaking if you chew on hard foods and ice. Avoid doing so, and they will last indefinitely. Even, if your crown becomes damaged, loose, or falls off, it can easily be repaired by Dr. Dhayni.
Crowns require only the same good oral hygiene as your natural teeth. That means brushing at least twice daily, flossing at least once a day and visiting Dr. Dhayni every six months for a routine cleaning and exam.
